10 questions to ask a software vendor before you sign

The questions that separate a good demo from a good fit: references, onboarding, exit terms and who has actually done your job.

A demo shows you the best of a product. These questions show you the rest.

  1. Which customers of our size and industry have been live for more than 12 months, and can we speak to a daily user there?
  2. What does onboarding actually include, how long does it take on average, and what does it cost?
  3. What are the three most common reasons customers leave in year one?
  4. What happens to our data, and what do we pay, if we leave after the first year?
  5. Which integrations are native, and which need a partner or custom work?
  6. Who on your product or leadership team has done our job?
  7. What is on the roadmap for companies like ours in the next 12 months, and what isn't?
  8. Who supports us after go-live, and what are the response times?
  9. Which features in the demo cost extra or need a higher plan?
  10. Can the success milestones for onboarding be written into the contract?
